About the Writing Center?

The Writing Center, located on the ground floor of the McCain Library, is a peer tutoring organization that provides students with individual assistance with written assignments. The Center bases its work on identifying students' strengths and building on them to achieve further progress. Students at every ability level and stage of the writing process come to the Writing Center to work in collaborative relationships with tutors, who offer guidance and serve as responsive readers for the evolving text.

During 30- to 60-minute conferences, tutors help student writers develop confidence in their ability to translate thoughts into written work, to use writing to express and substantiate their ideas, and to produce a polished final product. The tutor makes every effort to encourage the student to set the agenda for the session but can also provide guidance when necessary. This service is free of charge, available to all Agnes Scott students, and confidential. It is an integral part of the academic program at Agnes Scott College.

In addition to tutoring, we provide a communal space that encourages writing and intellectual stimulation. The Center is open 24 hours a day with keycard access and is the only part of the library building that allows both food and drink. The Center hosts many resources, including a computer lab, books on writing and manuals of style, and handouts designed to assist writers with a variety of issues.
